One in five children may not have access to basic school supplies because of their family’s economic circumstances. Receiving a backpack filled with the tools needed to succeed in school can be a life-changing experience.
That’s why GraceWorks earmarked all funds raised during this year’s Big Payback event on May 5 to purchase backpacks for the August 1 Big Backpack Giveaway event.
The Big Payback allowed donors to support multiple nonprofits and make gifts of any size, from $10 and up. The inaugural event in 2014 raised $1,492,492.50 for 525 nonprofits.
Last year, GraceWorks raised just over $3,200 during the Big Payback. Combined with a $5,000 grant and other assistance, GraceWorks was able to meet the $10,000 required to purchase 2,000 backpacks. However, this year, the grant was not renewed adding pressure to raise more during the Big Payback.
We’re excited to report that, due to the generosity of many donors, GraceWorks raised $6,120 during 24-hour day of giving. Overall, the Big Payback raised a remarkable $2,542,694.41 million for 755 nonprofits in Middle Tennessee.
In addition, the GraceWorks Thrift Store dedicated all revenue earned on May 5th to the program. The store was open extended hours along with special sales and discounts throughout the day. Many customers also donated $5.00 and received a $5 discount towards their purchase. Combined, GraceWorks was able to meet the overall goal of $10,000 and will soon be purchasing the 2,000 needed backpacks.
We thank all who helped make this happen. We’re excited that our community has allowed GraceWorks to again be able to help give children a good start in school again this year.
